rocky lane
st. agnes, UK

The town of St. Agnes is nestled in a valley along the rocky shoreline of Northern Cornwall, which lies within a UNESCO World Heritage site and is surrounded by some of the best surfing beaches in Europe. The Rocky Lane project occupies an extraordinary position on a steep bluff overlooking the town.
The design brief for this project called for eleven small eco-friendly units of significant design merit that would respect and augment the unique nature of the site, and preserve as many as possible of its hundreds of rare specimen trees. Extensive collaboration with landscape architects, conservationists, and members of the community led to a plan that creates room for eleven small homes while requiring the removal of fewer than 20 of the 576 trees.
The steepness of the site prohibits roadways, so each of the homes is designed to be prefabricated in small panelized components that can be brought in by hand or with light tracked vehicles to reduce ground disturbance. The total floor area of the entire project could not exceed 12,000 square feet, and the proposed homes range in size from 700 to 1200sf.
